Making Money from Blogging?

You've probably heard about people making money from blogging and wondered if and how you could do the same thing.

The short answer is yes, it's definitely true that you can earn money from blogging.  The long answer is that it does take a bit of effort.  With a bit of work and dedication, you can make a very respectable living from blogging. 

First, let's take a look at what are blogs and blogging. 

Blogs, or web logs, came about as a way for people to post text on the world wide web anywhere they had an internet connection and have it available for viewing almost instantaneously.  This was in contrast to a traditional website which required logging into your hosting account and uploading any changes.  Blogs were simpler to deal with and had the added feature of alerting various services throughout the internet that the blog was just updated and attracting more traffic.

The ease and speed with which a blog could be updated as well as the content management feature has only served to make the blog the platform of choice for many online entrepreneurs .

These days, you'll see blogs covering every subject under the sun. Some blogs resemble a "Dear Diary", others are full-blown online stores, and still others are devoted to the latest fad or scandal.  Whatever you can think of in terms of a niche can probably take shape in a blog.

So how can you make money from blogging?

A common way is to use Google's Adsense program. When visitors come to your site or blog and see these ads they may click on them.  If that's the case, you've made money!  Of course, the amount may only be a $0.01, but the pennies can add up if you have a lot of visitors.

Some bloggers are affiliate marketers and will write a short post about the product or service they are affiliated with.  If the reader then uses the affiliate's link and visits the site where the product or service is actually sold and makes a purchase, the blogger earns a commission from the sale.

You may have your own product or service.  If that's the case, you can  use blogging as an effective method of getting your products in front of the world.

There are free blog hosting services, the most popular of which are Blogger.com (owned by Google) and WordPress.com.  However, if you have your own domain, you should seriously consider hosting your own blog using the WordPress blog platform.  There have been too many instances of people losing their blogs when using one of these services, that it's just not worth the risk.

WordPress is a phenomenal system for delivering your message to the world wide web.  There is a huge selection of themes and plugins (bits of software or scripts that enhance the functionality of the blog), many of which are free, that can be utilized to customize your blog.

But what if you're not particularly interested in affiliate marketing?  What if you already have a business?  Perhaps you're a consultant with one of the direct sales or home party plan companies and already have a website or want to have one.  Unless your company happens to prohibit any kind of online advertising, you can achieve more than you dream of with a blog in addition to the company-provided website. 

Some consultants already send out a company newsletter to their customers.  That's a nice feature to inform your regular customers about special sales or events.  But think about how you can gain more visitors to your website and hopefully rack up more sales.  You can't send out a newsletter to someone you don't know, so what else can you do?  You can certainly advertise extensively, but that can be quite costly and the returns may not be that great.

With your own blog, you can feature certain products and let everyone know how great it is, or you can highlight special offers.  The possibilities are numerous and it's up to you to be creative in getting the message out about your product.
