If you are like many of us working at home, your
desk space is always a clutter and you can never find what you
are looking for!
Organization is a skill that can be
learned. The key to getting better organized is to start with
one small step and then take others one at a time. You may find
that what you've put off for years takes only an hour to do. And
once you see the benefits in one part of your life, you'll be
motivated to stay organized! Take a look at the tips below and
see how much they could really help you!
Keep a trash can, pen holder, labels and other organizational items
near your desk at all times. This will motivate you to put your
paperwork in the folders, pens in the pen holder and trash in the
trash can. Many of us tend to just throw our paperwork on the desk,
and lay the trash items down to throw away later. Which causes a
huge mix up! With the trash can, folders and pen holder available,
you will be more motivated to put each item in the correct space.
Create separate folders for each type of paperwork.
Make a flyer folder, order form folder, fundraiser folder and so on.
Keep each item in the correct place, then when you need it, you will
always know where to find it.
Keep the things you use on a daily basis near, so
you do not have to chase them down each time you use them! Here are
just a few items you should always have nearby:
calculator,
canceled checks folder, checkbook, clock, eraser, envelopes,
labels, letter opener, notepads, paper clips, pens and pencils,
rubber bands, ruler, scissors, stapler, stamps, stationary and
tape.
Use a planner! Instead of writing down tasks to do
on a small piece of paper, and losing half of them, try to keep all
tasks that need to be completed in your planner! And stick to your
planner!
Don't clutter up your computer space! If you have to
many files, graphics and other business material saved on your
computer, you could slow your computer down. Instead, save your
information on a floppy disk and label each disk with what is saved
on it. Then when you need to use it, just pop it in and go! This
will save a lot of space on your computer and you will always know
where it is!
Not only do you need to organize your desk and
paperwork, you also need to organize your time. In your planner write
the times you are going to work each day and stick to it! If you say,
I am going to work 9am until 1pm, do just that. No additional 10
minutes, because they all add up. Your time needs to be as organized
as any other part of your business!!
